What is Supermoon and How it Occurs
What is Perigee and Apogee
Supermoon
is a celestial phenomenon that may occur multiple times in a year. As obvious,
the event is related to the appearance of the moon from our planet. We all know
what is full moon and new moon but supermoon is not a very commonly known form
of the moon. In order to understand supermoon, one needs to understand the
orbit of the moon around the earth.
Supermoonsin 2021 will occur in March, April, May, and June. These super full moons are
known as super worm moon, super pink moon, super flower moon, and super
strawberry moon. You can check the complete list of all the super full moons
here. In 2021, we will also see super new moons in November and December. But new
moons are not visible and hence most of the people supermoons as full moons
only.
Difference Perigee and
Apogee
Due to the
elliptical orbit of moon around our planet, the distance between moon and earth
keeps changing. Due to the changing positions of the Earth and Moon on their
orbit and around the sun and Earth respectively, the distance too keeps
changing. Hence, there are certain points when our planet is at its closes and
farthest from Moon. When the orbit of the moon is at its closest to the Earth,
it is called perigee. Vice versa when it is at its farthest from our planet, it
is called apogee.
When this phenomenon
of perigee or apogee occurs along with full moon, it is called supermoon. It it
happens along with new moon, it is called super new moon. Though apogee and
perigee happens once in a month, it does not always coincide with the full moon
and new moon. Check cmplete new moon 2021 dates list.
Full moon
and new moon are the most important phases of the moon. However, there are
total 8 stages of moon that include last quarter, first quarter, waxing
gibbous, waning gibbous, waxing crescent, and waning crescent. Keep following
